Baby Passport Cost: Fees, Photos and Faster Processing

See US infant passport book and card fees, photo costs, processing times and optional rush charges, with totals for routine and expedited applications.

A baby applying for a US passport pays the child fee, rather than traveling on a parent’s document. For the standard passport book, the federal application and acceptance charges total $135. A paid photograph, supporting records and faster service can raise the bill. The route matters too: buying the cheaper card will not solve the documentation requirement for an international flight.

The amounts below were checked against State Department and USPS information in October 2026. They cover an application in the United States for a US citizen child under 16. They do not decide citizenship, custody or destination entry rules. Start with the document your journey requires, then add only the services that address a real deadline or missing item.

  • $150 Book and card, including acceptance fee

The passport book and card have different travel uses

The State Department’s child fee schedule lists a $100 application charge for a passport book, $15 for a card, or $115 for both. Each option has a $35 acceptance charge when submitted together as a child application. That produces the totals in the table. The application payment goes to the State Department; acceptance is a separate payment to the facility.

A passport card is for eligible land and sea travel involving Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and Caribbean countries. It cannot replace a book for international air travel. Check the State Department’s route guidance and the destination’s entry requirements before choosing. For a family planning a flight, the infant airline ticket budget covers another charge that the passport does not include.

Buying both documents together adds the card’s application fee to the book application, without another acceptance fee at that same submission. That does not mean every baby benefits from both. An extra document is spending unless it serves a planned use. Do not choose the card solely because its federal total is lower.

Photographs and supporting records sit outside the federal total

USPS advertised a $15 photo service at its September 2026 New Orleans passport fair. Using that published example, a routine book application plus a photograph totals $150. Ask the appointment location whether it photographs infants, what it charges and whether photos are available at the appointment you have booked. The example is a documented service price, not a guarantee that every photographer charges the same amount.

The photo has to meet the passport rules, rather than merely look good in a frame. If taking it at home, follow the State Department’s baby-photo guidance, including background and positioning. A rejected photograph can mean another photo purchase and a delay. A store’s promise that its photos are accepted does not waive the government’s requirements.

Supporting records can add another expense. Before ordering a birth certificate, check whether the certificate already available meets the citizenship-evidence instructions. A hospital souvenir certificate is different from a certified vital record. Use the issuing office’s own order process and fee schedule instead of assuming a third-party convenience service is required.

Faster processing and faster return delivery are separate purchases

Expedited application processing adds $60. The State Department’s current fee page lists $26.87 for optional 1–3 day return delivery of a passport book after issuance. An older shipping price found in a search result is not the price to use when preparing the payment. The return service is unavailable for a card-only application.

Using the $15 USPS photograph as an example, an expedited book application totals $210 before optional shipping. Adding the current fast-return fee brings that worked total to $236.87. Faster mailing of the application to the agency is another service; its cost depends on the mailing arrangement and is excluded from those totals.

There is no reason to pay for a faster return trip if the main problem is an incomplete application. Check documents, consent and payment before selecting speed options. Equally, a rapid return shipment does not reduce the agency’s processing interval. Label each optional charge by the part of the timeline it changes.

Mailing time extends the advertised processing window

As of the State Department’s October 5, 2026 update, routine processing takes 4–6 weeks and expedited processing takes 2–3 weeks. The department allows up to 2 weeks for the application to reach it and another 2 weeks for the issued passport to arrive by mail. Those mailing periods are outside processing time, rather than already included in it.

Do not turn an estimate into a guaranteed arrival date. A request for more information can extend the application. Build the travel decision around receiving the document, the trip’s cancellation terms and the agency’s latest timeline. Keep the tracking and application-status details where both parents can find them.

Urgent travel follows a different appointment process: the State Department requires proof of international travel within 14 calendar days for that category. Paying a commercial courier does not itself create a passport-agency appointment. Follow the government instructions for the deadline involved, including any separate emergency requirements.

Children under 16 apply in person, and their passports are valid for 5 years. The State Department says both parents or guardians attend with the child unless the prescribed additional documentation addresses an absent parent or guardian. Read that section before booking an appointment that only one parent can reach. Direct an unresolved custody or consent question to the agency and legal assistance rather than a general budget guide.

Bring the right payment to the right payee

At a passport acceptance facility, the State Department application payment uses a check or money order. The facility takes its own acceptance payment and sets its accepted payment methods. Confirm both before attending with the baby.

Budget the appointment’s travel, parking and time away from work as household costs, rather than federal passport fees. A convenient photo-and-acceptance appointment can reduce extra trips even when the photo price is not the lowest available. Add those costs to the first-year baby budget only if travel belongs in the family’s plans. For supplies purchased before a trip, the baby registry discount guide explains how to avoid spending simply to claim a discount.

Questions people ask

How much does a newborn's US passport cost?

A passport book costs $135 in federal application and acceptance fees. With the $15 photo service advertised by USPS in the cited 2026 example, the total is $150 before other expenses.

Can a baby use a passport card on an international flight?

No. The card does not cover international air travel. Select a passport book for that route and check the destination's entry requirements separately.

Does expedited service include express return delivery?

No. The $60 expedite fee changes application processing. Optional 1–3 day book return delivery costs another $26.87 under the current fee schedule; mailing the application faster is separate again.

Can a parent renew the baby's passport by mail later?

A child under 16 applies in person each time; the State Department does not treat that as the adult mail-renewal process. The child's passport validity is 5 years.
